The West Gallery - Rooms 25 to 28: The 16th century starts in Room 25 with Michelangelo’s Holy Family (1505-07), his only completed oil painting, thought to have been painted on the birth of Agnolo Doni and Maddalena Strozzi’s firstdaughter. Florentine Classicism in the form of Raphael and Andrea del Sarto occupy Room 26, with Raphael’s Madonna of the Goldfinch (currently under restoration and replaced by a copy), touted as the best example of this period for its serene landscape of diffused light. Also watch for his Portrait of Giulio II (1512), a work currently under much discussion after the discovery of an identical portrait (now on show at the National Gallery in London) – the copy, probably carried out by his workshop under his direction, has yet to be identified. Florentine Mannerists occupy Room 27 with Rosso Fiorentino’s seminal Moses Defending the Daughters of Jethro (around 1523), along with works by its other figurehead,Pontorno. Titian’s notorious Venus of Urbino (1538) justifiably claims most of the limelight in Room 28, alongside works of Sebastiano del Piombo and Palma Il Vecchio.
